Located on the eastern edge of Central Greece and projecting into the Aegean Sea, the triangular peninsula of Attica covers a large area of approximately 3,808 square kilometers.
In classical Greece, the historical region of Attica held great significance, encompassing the powerful city-state of Athens.
Today, in addition to Athens, the modern administrative region of Attica includes the cities of Piraeus, Eleusis, Megara, Laurium, and Marathon, the municipality of Troizinia on the Peloponnesian mainland, the Saronic Islands (i.e. Salamis, Aegina, Poros, Hydra and Spetses), as well as the islands of Kythira and Antikythera.
To the north, Attica’s natural boundaries are fixed by the mountain range of Cithaeron, same as described by Plato in ancient times. To the west, Attica extends as far as the sea and the Corinth Canal. The Saronic Gulf lies to the south and the Euboean Gulf to the east.
The mountains of Hymettus, Aigaleo and Penteli, as well as Parnitha, the highest mountain of Attica, separate the peninsula into the plains of Pedias, Mesogaia, and Thriasion.
In terms of surface waters, the Cephissus is the longest river, while Lake Marathon, an artificial lake, formed from the construction of Marathon Dam in the 1920s, is considered to be one of the main water supply reservoirs of the area.
Attica’s population is estimated at about 3,750,000. It’s worth mentioning that more than 95% of these people live in Athens.
Attica offers a fantastic range of unique holiday experiences, involving both awe-inspiring archeological sites, as well as breath-taking sun and sea destinations.
The Acropolis, the Agora, the Library of Handrian, the Kallimarmaro, the Pnika, the fortress of Aigosthena, the ancient sanctuary of Brauron, the temples of Artemis, Poseidon, Nemesis and Olympius Zeus are just a few of the most engaging tourist hotspots.
